The free Ground News alternative

Ground News made one idea popular: before you trust a headline, see who else is reporting the story and how. grouped.news is built on the same idea. It collects reports from many publishers, groups the ones about the same event into one story, and links to every original article. The difference is that all of it is free, and it works outside the US too.

See today's grouped stories, or read on for how the two compare.

Google News is the most common free pick, but it does not tell you how outlets differ. AllSides shows three outlets per story, picked as left, center and right. grouped.news lists every outlet it follows that covered the story, and on US stories reads how each one framed it.

Two more names come up on most lists. Media Bias/Fact Check rates news sources for political bias and factual reporting; it does not group stories. The Flip Side is a weekday morning email with the best points from liberal and conservative media, starting with a free trial. Neither puts every outlet's report on one story page.

What is different

Free, with no account

Ground News has a free version, but its full coverage comparison, Blindspot analysis and bias dashboard are part of its paid Vantage plan. On grouped.news every story page shows every outlet covering the story, with nothing locked. There is nothing to sign up for unless you want the morning email.

Each story, not each outlet

Ground News labels each outlet's overall political lean and factuality, averaged from outside rating agencies. Those labels describe a publication, not the article in front of you, and they are drawn on a US political scale. grouped.news looks at the article instead. On US stories it places each outlet by how it framed this story, how sensational it was, how loaded its wording was and how one-sided it read, so you can see which outlet stands apart on this particular event. An AI model makes those readings, and it can be wrong, so every outlet's own headline sits next to its reading.

News from your own country

grouped.news has editions for the UK, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, Finland, Hungary, Romania, Russia, Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Slovenia, Latin America and the Middle East. Each one is built from local publishers and written in the local language, so a German reader compares German newsrooms, not US ones.

A short morning email

The morning briefingsends the day's most widely covered stories to your inbox at breakfast, each linking to the full comparison.

When Ground News is the better fit

If you want a left, center and right label on every outlet, a Blindspot feed of stories one side ignores, or a dashboard of your own reading habits, Ground News has those and grouped.news does not. It also has mobile apps. grouped.news is a website.

How grouped.news works

Every hour grouped.news reads the public feeds of the publishers it follows (every three hours for country editions). It matches reports about the same event by their headlines and puts them into one story. Each story gets a short summary and a page listing every report, when it was filed and who filed it. The summary is written by AI and can contain mistakes, so the original reporting is always one click away. The full list of sources is on each story page, and publishers can see how they appear on For publishers.

Questions

Is Ground News free?

Partly. Ground News has a free version that lets you compare sources on a story by bias rating, location and publication time. Its Vantage plan, $8.33 a month billed annually as of October 2026, adds Blindspot analysis, full coverage comparison, bias and factuality ratings and a personal news bias dashboard. Some public libraries also offer Ground News free with a library card; Herrick District Library in Michigan announced it in February 2026.

Is grouped.news free?

Yes. Every story page, every country edition and the morning email are free, and you don't need an account. The site shows ads, which pay for running it.

Does grouped.news rate outlets as left or right?

No. Instead of a fixed label per outlet, it reads how each outlet wrote this particular story: its framing, how sensational it is, its loaded language and its slant. The reading comes from an AI model and can be wrong, so the outlet's own headline is always shown next to it.

Can I read news from outside the US?

Yes. Besides the US front page there are editions for the UK, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, Finland, Hungary, Romania, Russia, Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Slovenia, Latin America and the Middle East, each built from local publishers in the local language.

Is there a grouped.news app?

Not in the app stores. grouped.news is a website that works on phones, and you can add it to your home screen from your browser's share or menu button, where it opens like an app.

Does grouped.news get me past paywalls?

No. It links to the original articles, and any publisher's subscription rules still apply there.
